How much have you deleted and what kind?

Did you delete the spamming user accounts?

In three or four days, I deleted maybe 100 or so posts, dozens of threads, all very obvious spam. I also deleted dozens of users.

Then it went back to normal.

Here is one that is not so obvious: Nucleus Support :: View topic - Introduce yourself
Looks like spam to me, 99% sure, but I wouldn't want to delete it for that 1% possibility it is a legitimate user.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to disable sigs until a user has 10 posts, might make it less attractive to the spammers like this one.

I deleted that one before I read this post. grant-loan links is always span. I've become ruthless with any hint of spam.

I check all the new users each day for signs of spammers, like URL fields and signatures that look like spammer links. Or urls in other fields like location. It becomes obvious who the spammers are and some have set formats for user names and email addresses that are recognizable. If a user account looks legit, I leave it for 3 days then clear out users more than 3 days old who have not made any posts (it's done by a script). Most legit users register when they have a question, but many spammers sit on accounts for weeks before using them. Worst is that the legit users need to re-register when they have a question.

I've also modified some code such that you can't enter a website or signature during the registration. They have to log in with the account after activation to do that.

Spammers are evil.
